Vsebinski opis projekta

Plini alkalijskih kovin se že nekaj časa uporabljajo v atomskih magnetometrih na vroče pare za natančno merjenje magnetnih polj in so na mnogih področjih že popolnoma konkurenčni SQUID-u (npr. kot detektorji signala pri NQR in NMR, v raziskavah na področju fizike in metrologije). V primerjavi s SQUID-om so atomski magnetometri na vroče pare bolj občutljivi in ker ne potrebujejo kriogenskega hlajenja tudi kompaktnejši in cenejši za uporabo. Poleg tega jih ni treba umeriti. Z zamenjavo toplih atomov za hladne bi lahko dobili ultimativni senzor magnetnega polja. Podoben razvoj poteka na področju merjenja časa, kjer so ure s hladnimi atomi za nekaj velikostnih redov bolj stabilne od standardnih cezijevih ur.

Glavna prednost magnetometra na hladne atome pred tistim na vroče pare so boljša prostorska ločljivost, daljši koherenčni čas ter zanemarljiva dopplerska razširitev, kar pomeni, da je mnogo bolj občutljiv in natančen. Zaradi majhne velikosti atomskega oblaka (premer znaša le nekaj desetink milimetra) bi lahko takšne senzorje uporabili za merjenje magnetnega polja po prostoru in njegovega gradienta. Metode za hlajenje atomov omogočajo tudi natančen nadzor nad pozicijo, številom, gostoto, temperaturo in kvantnim stanjem ujetih atomov. Skupaj z možnostjo natančnega uravnavanja interakcij med atomi s t. i. Feshbachovimi resonancami omogočajo izvajanje eksperimentov pri različnih pogojih. Zaradi tega so hladni atomi idealen sistem za testiranje kvantnih tehnologij. V projektu predlagamo razvoj novega magnetometra na hladne atome. Ujete atome bomo uporabili kot natančen senzor magnetnega polja. Dokazati nameravamo osnovne koncepte delovanja takšnega senzorja in sestaviti prototip, s katerim bomo izmerili signal jedrske kvadrupolne resonance (NQR) pravega vzorca.
